(IMOCG) will take place in the summer of 2024, in the week of 28 July to 3 August in the Dutch town of Groningen. This time, the competition will feature three monumental organs.
After two successful editions – in 2017 and 2022 – the Groningen organ competition IMOCG has managed to establish itself firmly in the ranks of major international organ competitions. Groningen’s historic organs appear to have a special attraction for organists, as entries come from all corners of the world: from South Korea and Japan to America, and from Denmark to Hungary and Spain.
The IMOCG is open to organists up to 35 years old. Registration is possible until 13 March 2024. From all applications, a selection committee (consisting of Theo Jellema, Laurens de Man and Cor Ardesch) will choose 12 candidates on the basis of sound recordings. The IMOCG lasts a week, from 28 July to 3 August. Three monumental organs will be played: the De Mare/Hinsz organ in Loppersum and the Schnitger organs in the Akerk and the Martinikerk in Groningen.
The repertoire to be played is varied: participants can choose from a compiled list of compositions by Johann Jakob Froberger, Johann Caspar Kerll, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, J.S. Bach, Dieterich Buxtehude, Piet Kee, Antonio Vivaldi, Jan Brandts Buys and Reitze Smits, among others.
The organists who successfully pass the selection procedure can look forward to a wonderful musical week, with a stay in the pleasant university town of Groningen, meeting other young organists, an opportunity to play on monumental organs, an exciting competition with the chance to win the highest honor and also some cash prizes, and master classes by famous concert organists. And all this in a great atmosphere. It is a week they will never forget.
